Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV).

As Christians, shouldn’t we all get along? I will never forget an argument with a sister in Christ during the pandemic. We had a difference of opinion on a controversial health matter. When she started screaming at me, I just walked away. Still, it left me with a mix of anger and sadness about what happened. 

Cultivating the spiritual unity of God’s family is a theme in the book of Philippians. But what is spiritual unity?

The Apostle Paul wrote about spiritual unity in our key verse. He explained that without humility, spiritual unity is impossible. In Philippians 2:5-11, he writes about Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself to die for us on the cross, which is the ultimate example of humility. 

Paul also mentions some other qualities needed for spiritual unity in Philippians 2. We should put others first, encourage each other, work together, and stop complaining.

As followers of Christ, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to produce love and concern for other believers and serve them through acts of kindness. 

Recently, I experienced an opportunity to create spiritual unity when my friend and spiritual mentor asked me to help her self-publish her book of poetry. Had I known the extent of the work, I might not have said yes. However, helping my friend create a legacy for her daughters fills me with joy.

How can you foster greater spiritual unity within God’s family with humble acts of kindness? Let’s humble ourselves in prayer and ask the Lord to help us encourage others.
