Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

May 28, 2024    Andi Benson

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Andi Benson.

Our scripture reading is from Psalm 118:24 NIV.

“This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118: 24

NIV).

Joy is so much more than a feeling. It is a condition of the heart and the mind. Some people compare joy and happiness as being the same thing. They are similar in meaning but very different in action.

In action, a Christ follower may be unhappy due to difficulties in life but can still find joy during challenging times. Joy overflows out of a heart that trusts in the Lord.

My sweet momma is a perfect example of living in joy. She sees the good and bad things occurring as God’s work. Disappointments or missed opportunities are viewed as God’s protection and bigger blessings to come.

When feelings of hurt occur, she uses those times to teach forgiveness. When dealing with difficult people, she shows empathy and understanding, reminding us that those hurting others are more than likely hurting themselves.

If I’m being honest, there were times in my teenage years when I wished she hadn’t seen the positive in EVERYTHING that happened to me. I wanted to stew in my anger or self-pity for a while, but she was quick to help change my thoughts. In hindsight, I am so thankful she beautifully showed me how to seek God’s JOY in everything.

Finding JOY in each day takes work. It is a state of heart and mind that forms when we closely follow Jesus, read God’s word, and surround ourselves with others with the same intent. It is a purposeful practice. The more we immerse ourselves in God; our hearts change with gratitude and joy for what God has given us.

Living joyfully says, “This is truly the day that the Lord has made especially for me. I will find JOY in the good and bad and rejoice in it” (Psalm 118: 24 NIV Paraphrased).

What areas of your life can you find JOY you haven’t seen before? Ask God to show you all the joyful things you have missed, and thank Him for those blessings.
