“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:18-19 NIV).
If you think about your friendships, what would you say started those relationships initially? Did you grow up together in the same neighborhood? Were you both part of the same school, church, or workplace? How did you first connect or even speak to one another? More than likely, your friendships started with someone brave enough to be kind. Whether it was you or your friend who smiled or spoke first, one of you desired to connect with the other and demonstrated love through an act of kindness.
Kindness is everything to me. My heart is driven to be kind to the people I encounter. Unkindness upsets me, and it makes me uncomfortable when someone is treated in any way that is not encouraging or nice. God has woven in me a desire to make others feel comfortable and accepted when I am around. I will speak to everyone, even when it’s awkward. Although showing unsolicited kindness to others can feel uncomfortable, I know God’s prompting can always be trusted. The kindness is not always returned; sometimes it embarrasses my family members who are with me, but God always has a purpose and uses it for good. I have never regretted being kind and am happy to say that many of those awkward moments have resulted in some of the sweetest friendships.
My example of having a heart for others comes from a God who showed kindness first. He did the kindest thing anyone could ever do to form a friendship with us. He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. His perfect example of kindness and unconditional love accepts us as we are, leading us to love this way.
Take account of all the kindness God has poured upon you and then choose to boldly show kindness to everyone around you.
