Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Jessica Gerth.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV).
In college, my laptop became unusable due to a computer virus. I took it to a repair shop because I have no computer skills, and they promised to notify me when it was fixed. I never doubted their abilities and didn’t offer to assist them. I left it there and trusted they would handle it.
I worry excessively. Everyone worries, but my mind can spin a simple problem into a catastrophic one in seconds. My concern has never been about “me,” yet I worry endlessly about those I love and feel responsible for caring for everyone as if I have the power over the well-being and happiness of those around me.
Paul’s command in the above verse begins, “Do not be anxious about anything….” Right, Paul. As if spinning myself in never-ending circles of worry is something I can turn off. But overthinking and agonizing over things doesn’t solve our problems. Worrying is about as successful at “fixing” things as I would be at repairing computers!
Rather than allow our anxious feelings to consume us, Paul instructs us to pray about everything. Going to God in prayer shouldn’t be something we do as a last resort after we’ve exhausted all other options. We must also be careful not to worry over things and label it prayer. When we make our requests known to God and stand in gratitude for all He has done, worry packs its bags and leaves.
Peace is not the absence of problems or feeling like everything is “okay.” It is the presence of God regardless of life’s circumstances. He promises to guard our hearts and minds with His peace. Give God your brokenness today and trust Him to handle it all.
