Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation. Today’s devotion was written by Jessica Gerth.

”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5 NIV).

Sitting in the college counselor’s office with my seventeen-year-old, I could see the panic in his eyes when she asked, “So, what do you want to do for the fifty years following graduation?” I remember myself at that age: Torn between excitement and uncertainty. On the verge of becoming an adult, yet feeling unsure of myself and my future.

When Jeremiah is called to become a prophet at around the same age, he initially questions God. He feels he is too young and inexperienced. I can easily picture my son and, honestly, myself responding in the same way. How often do we say “no” to God because of fear or insecurity?

God answers Jeremiah’s doubt with the assurance of His constant guidance, presence, and protection. However, what stands out the most about Jeremiah’s story is that the Lord tells him that he was created intentionally for a specific purpose. Before God formed him, his calling was perfectly planned out, because He knew him so infinitely well.

What peace this knowledge brings me. Nothing is a surprise to God! He knows everything about us - our fears, callings, and how we will respond.

The Bible is full of people God set apart for holy service; many of whom initially had reservations. Abraham was old, Martha worried a lot, Jonah was reluctant, and Moses stuttered, to name a few. But God used them, and He will use us, too. Think about how things would have happened differently if Jonah, Moses, or Jeremiah continued making excuses.

God made us with the intention of using us for "…good works, which [he] prepared in advance,” especially for us (Ephesians 2:10 NIV). God wants to use each of us to change the world, and He made us with a specific purpose in mind.

What is holding you back from accepting God’s call to serve Him?
