Today, Shandyn Paul encourages us with her story of God’s call to mission.

“This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls” (Hebrews 6:19a NLT).

It was 2 am, and my infant son was awake again. It had become a nightly occurrence, and I was sad and weary. Life had catapulted me into a place of grief I’d never experienced. The death of my grandfather and father within months of each other left me reeling with uncertainty.

As I sat there, rocking my son back to sleep each night, those 2 am wake-up calls became my phone line to the Heavenly Father.

Rock and pray.

Pray and rock.

Until my son was asleep again.

Just as my son found rest in my arms, I, too, found rest in my Father’s loving and gentle embrace.

During those nightly encounters with the Lord, I felt Him speak a sense of purpose over my life. I’d found myself in a season of wandering. I wandered left and right, searching for direction and meaning.

Growing up as the grandchild of missionaries, I often envisioned being a missionary myself. I longed to go to the ends of the earth, preaching and teaching about all Jesus had done for me. Instead, I found myself, night after night, rocking and praying. The Lord reminded me there that I was already on a mission. He had placed me exactly where He wanted me and would use me in the places I couldn’t yet see the need for.

The Lord spoke purpose into my life and called me to a mission field I had never imagined. Though I’d already been in the “field” for several years by that point, I hadn’t realized it- motherhood was my ministry. God had called me to a life of ministry, but it looked vastly different than I had anticipated.

One October morning, I put feet to my faith and trusted where God would lead me. I started my blog, The Anchored Mama, based on Hebrews 6:19. In those valley moments of life, I had seen Him prove His faithfulness, and I knew He was asking me to share it with others along the way.
