Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Marge Webb.
“Everyone who believes in Him is set free from sin and guilt-- something the law of Moses had no power to do” (Acts 13:39 TPT).
The noted psychologist James Dobson says, “Give me an Army of two-year-olds, and I will conquer the world.” As I write this, I realize our two-year-old granddaughter is turning three. It’s been a challenging and fun year as she has gone from a baby needing everything done for her to an independent toddler whose favorite phrases are, “I can do it myself,” and “NO; I don’t want to!
Like the verse above, the apostle Paul’s writings reflect comparisons to the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament focuses on rules, sacrifices, and earning atonement. The New Testament points to Jesus and the grace and freedom that flows from His sacrifice on the cross.
But what is freedom, really? And how does it relate to wisdom? Paul, in his writings, suggests that with Christ’s death and resurrection, all things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial. Just because we are free to do something or choose a certain path doesn't mean it's the wisest choice for us. This is where prayer and learning to discern God’s guidance can lead us in the right direction.
The toddler, Noa, may say emphatically, “No, I don’t want to,” at nap time. Is that because she is not tired and doesn’t need a nap? No. As adults, we know more about what she needs than she does, but this two-year-old attitude causes her to believe she can do whatever she desires.
Don’t we all, at times, find ourselves acting like toddlers? We yearn for that shiny new car we can’t afford or a career change that promises more money, even if it means sacrificing time with our loved ones. In these moments, we need to turn to Jesus and recognize that the wisdom of the Holy Spirit trumps our two-year-old cravings.
Have you experienced a time in your life when you overstepped your liberating freedom and did something you later regretted? Feel free to share in the comments below.
