Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today, Sharon Gomez shares her thoughts on joy.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV).
I recently went out to dinner with a friend, and he asked if I had found joy since my divorce six years ago. I did a quick mental inventory of my life (health, good family relationships, secure job, and home) and should’ve said a confident YES! Instead, I hesitated and said, “Sometimes.”
Since that conversation, I have been praying and reflecting on what joy means. I assign big feelings to that tiny word, often associating it with happiness and peace.
In John 16, Jesus told his disciples their grief would turn to joy. They were confused. How can they be joyful knowing they will lose their teacher, friend, and the Savior they have been waiting generations for?
Jesus explained that they will have peace despite the troubles of the world because He has overcome the world. Jesus isn’t saying we can have peace because there will be no troubles but that we can have peace when we abide in Him.
When Jesus rose from the grave, He conquered death and released His Spirit. He gave us a supernatural gift of his Holy Presence that doesn't come and go based on our circumstances.
Because of this truth, joy doesn’t have to be a fleeting feeling but a byproduct of truth.
After my painful divorce, I didn’t know who I was, let alone recognize what made me happy. I found my identity in Christ and asked Him to help me remember the passions I once held: my love for animals, the call to write, and a desire to teach.
Friend, join me in letting go of the big feelings that hinder the truth that Jesus is with us no matter the circumstances. Let’s recognize the joy-filled moments and express gratitude for the coming eternity where troubles are no more.
Prayerfully consider if you are in a season where joy needs to be awakened. How can you rest knowing that you are not alone in your troubles?
