Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Debbie Hamilton.

Our scripture reading is from Psalm 94:18-19 NIV.

“When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy” (Psalm 94:18-19 NIV).

Not every moment in our lives will be filled with joy, happiness, or a cheerful outlook. It's just life, and sometimes life can be so hard. The only thing we can be sure of is our God's unfailing love and support for us.

Sometimes, I imagine what joy for several women in the Bible must have felt like. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall of the well when Jesus offered living water to that nameless woman who had come to fill her jar. Can you see her rushing back to town without her empty jar but filled with the joy of being recognized and accepted? Then there’s the woman with the issue of blood, who risked her own life and pushed through the crowd to touch the hem of Jesus' garment! To have that kind of faith to receive a healing that no doubt kept a smile on her face and testimony on her lips for the rest of her life! There are several other times I’m sure joy overflowed in hearts as Jesus touched, forgave, and healed people.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Jesus may have felt joy, too, at seeing the works His Father in Heaven was doing through his hands and words.

Daily, I visit my husband in memory care, and in moments, I look for ways to bring him joy, to make him smile or laugh. It doesn’t make me exactly joyful, but when my foot is slipping, I continue because I know my Lord is with me. He comforts me and gives me the strength to continue offering my husband moments of joy.

Just as Jesus placed joy in many hearts, we too are called to pass it on. 2 Corinthians 2:15 (NIV) states, “For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those being saved and those who are perishing.”

Can you think of times when your witness or kindness brought joy to someone else?
