Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts
and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Shayla Bullock.
“As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, ‘“Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.’” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed” (Mark 5:18-20 NIV).
I recently pursued a new position. I was excited and filled with expectations about this fresh opportunity. However, God spoke and declared I should stay where I was instead of moving in this new direction. My excitement was soon replaced with a sense of grief—the grief of not being allowed to experience this new move.
Can you relate? Have you ever been intrigued or even ready for a new move of God, only for God to keep you in your current placement or situation? How could I proceed? The disappointment was real, but God’s plan must be greater.
I was grateful for God’s guidance, but I also wrestled with my conflicting emotions of grief. I reflected on the once demon-possessed man in Mark 5. When Jesus delivered this man from his wretched condition, his only request was to go with Jesus. Jesus's response astounded me. Jesus wouldn’t let him go! Did this man feel rejected by Jesus, who had just healed him? Did he feel unworthy? Was he confused? Did this cause him grief?
The scripture doesn’t give us insight or clarity into this man’s feelings but shows us his actions. Amid his feelings, possibly including grief, he chose obedience! He obeyed Jesus. And Jesus’s plan was greater.
Due to this man’s account of Jesus, many people were amazed and possibly became followers. So, what do we do with the anguish of being unable to go in our desired direction? I’m unsure if I have a clear answer, but I know we should follow the example of this man in Mark 5 and choose obedience.
If you are experiencing any form of grief, how can you still choose obedience?
