“But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash, son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada, was Ahaziah’s sister, she hid the child from Athaliah so she could not kill him” (2 Chronicles 22:11 NIV).
I’m a mother with children ranging in age from seven to sixteen. So, I’ve seen my share of Disney movies! Many of the films have a similar theme: there’s a wicked villain, and then there’s an ordinary person who exhibits great boldness and bravery, thus becoming the hero. What if God is calling us, ordinary people, to become heroes? What if our superpower is love? I began to reflect and ask myself, how can I exhibit great boldness and bravery to defeat the wicked villain, Satan, by loving God and loving people?
Jehosheba was an ordinary woman who displayed extraordinary love. She steals her nephew, Joash, to rescue him from being murdered by his evil, wicked grandmother. Now, that’s love in action. Not only does she save him, but she hides and cares for him for at least six years. Again, love in action.
Jehosheba is an example of what it looks like when love is our superpower. Obviously, she loved God, and love compelled her to action. Although I’m ordinary, with God’s love as my superpower, I’m confident I can do extraordinary things to defeat the enemy. In 2 Chronicles 22, the wicked grandmother is destroyed, and Joash becomes king at seven. How is all this possible? Love, the love of God working through Jehosheba, makes it possible.
How is God calling you to use love as your superpower? Who in your orbit may need to experience your love? For Jehosheba, it was Joash. Who is God calling you to love or even to rescue?
