Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Jessica Gerth.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36 ESV).
During a recent conversation following a sermon on repentance, my brother told our mom, “I don’t think there is enough time to go through every sin I’ve done and confess to you guys. I was a lot of things on a lot of days!” My mom replied, “You do not need to confess everything to me. Whatever it was, I forgive you.”
Our past shapes our identity; mine had some amazing memories and sorrowful regrets. I had given my life to Christ but still allowed the lies of the enemy to keep me bound by brokenness, shame, fear, and sin. I was far away from the life of freedom that God intends for his children.
It’s funny how God uses ordinary moments and the people in our lives to speak to us. The conversation before had nothing to do with me but everything to do with the state of my heart. My mother’s sincere response of forgiveness was a powerful illustration of how God forgives - completely and unconditionally.
Despite being physically free, mentally and spiritually, I struggle to let go of past experiences. It can feel like the simple act of repentance isn’t enough. Maybe I should repent again just to be sure God forgave me. Satan loves using shame and guilt to convince us that past mistakes are unforgivable, robbing us of our peace, joy, and vitality.
Galatians 5:1 (NIV) reminds us, “It is for freedom that Christ set us free.” When we sincerely repent the first time, God completely removes that sin, and He doesn’t intend to bring it up again. We must believe in Christ’s ability to bring complete freedom from suffering, addictions, and shame—freedom from all sin.
What are you allowing to keep you chained to your past? Are there things you need to surrender to the Lord so that you may walk in the true freedom for which Christ died?
