Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Dec 24, 2024    Andi Benson

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion is written by Andi Benson.

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends for everything that I learned from my father I have made known to you” (John 15:15 NIV).

This season is about family, gathering with friends, celebrating Jesus’ birth, and all the many gifts that come from our Savior. One of my favorite traditions of the year is to get together with all my girlfriends for a fun party full of laughter and gifts. We call this time together “The Friends Christmas party” and it has become something we all look forward to every year. We recognize and regularly say how lucky we all are to have that kind of love and connection with each other. These friends are more than I deserve, and each one is special to me in their unique way.

Godly friendships can be an earthly example of my relationship with Jesus. However, with Jesus, the friendship never changes or wavers. He is my perfect friend. He is not only my Savior but my constant companion. He loves me unconditionally. He died for me despite my sins and rejection of Him. He draws near to me in my suffering and understands me better than any other person I know. He is my closest friend and wants to lead me to the most precious relationship with His father. Just speaking His name brings peace to my soul.

There is an old hymn I sang as a young girl in church that was written by Bill and Gloria Gaither called “There’s Something About That Name”. Describing all that Jesus means to me is difficult. The words of this song express my feelings best:

“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There’s just something about that name.

Master, Savior, Jesus, let all heaven and Earth proclaim.

Kings and Kingdoms will all pass away but there’s something about that name.”

Meditate on what Jesus’ name means to you and how you would describe Jesus, your friend.
