Freely Speaking Audio Devotions

Mar 11, 2025    Kristy Fitzgerald

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Kristy Fitzgerald shares about forbearance through praying for those who hurt us.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” Romans 12:21 (NKJV).

Few things are more painful than betrayal. It can cut like a knife deep into your heart and leave long lasting scars. When you look at the person or persons whose actions have destroyed your trust, emotions can rise, leaving you to wonder and ask, “Where is God in all of this?” Sometimes all you can do is cry out to God and tell Him how much you are hurting!

Chances are, we all will face a time of betrayal in our lives. So, the question is, how do we handle it? I believe the answer is in this scripture from the book of Romans. Simply put, we can’t allow other people’s actions to control our lives. If we do, we become consumed and in bondage to the pain others have inflicted on us. Nothing makes the enemy of our souls happier.

In my own life, praying for the one who has hurt me has helped me grow past the pain and closer to God. This has helped me to overcome evil with good.

When praying for them, release them to Jesus. Imagine bringing them by the hand to the feet of Jesus and leaving them there. Ask Him to let you see them through His eyes, not yours.

As much as you can, look past your pain and see the pain they have received. Pain not dealt with inflicts pain on others. Then forgive them. Sometimes, this takes time as you slowly release the pain to your Father, but I can promise you there is nothing more powerful than forgiveness.

And lastly, realize you are loved by a Savior who faced the worst betrayal of all but said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing” Luke 23:34 (NIV). Should we do anything less? He loves you and feels what you feel. He will bring you peace.
