Freely Speaking Audio Devotions
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today, Susan Hales reminds us that forbearance produces righteousness in our lives.
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (James 1:19–20 NIV).
My hands trembled as I slammed down the lid of my laptop and stormed out of the office after my angry retort in response to yet another snide remark from my coworker. My stomach clenched with anger.
Bitter thoughts swirled in my head, and I justified my harsh words. Why not return her nasty remarks with similar ones? She did everything possible to antagonize and discredit me.
However, I had no excuse for reacting in anger to my coworker’s resentment and verbal abuse. I could not take back my spiteful words.
The Bible is very clear about controlling our speech, as our key scripture points out. Now I understand controlling our speech requires forbearance, which means to abstain or restrain or practice patience and self-control. God demonstrates forbearance by withholding the judgment we deserve and showing patience with us.
How do we achieve the righteousness God desires? Instead of depending on our own strength, we submit to God and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit for forbearance to gain control over our tongues. We are to refrain from angry words, gossip, lying, and any inappropriate language not honoring God.
Think about how you handle anger and resentment from others. Are you quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry? Ask God to help you respond in a godly way.
