Freely Speaking Audio Devotions
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Andi Benson is the author of today’s devotion.
Our verse comes from 1 Peter 3:9, reading out of the New International Version, "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing" (1 Peter 3:9 NIV).
The call to forbearance is a testament to Christ-like love in a world often filled with conflict, anger, and misunderstanding. The apostle Peter urges us in 1 Peter 3:9 not to return evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, we are to respond with self-control and mercy.
Forbearance means deciding not to retaliate when hurt and fighting the instinct to fight back. This doesn't come easily to us as humans. I have been in this position one too many times, suffering my hurts and carrying the hurts of my loved ones. It is not easy to reflect forbearance, especially as a mom. When someone hurts my boys I want to lash out like a protective momma bear. When faced with deciding what to do, I have reacted both graciously and defensively in those situations. One led to temporary gratification but instant regret. The other reflected the heart of Christ and spoke volumes about my faith.
Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. In His life, He never retaliated against those who insulted or hurt Him. Even as He hung on the cross, He prayed for those who crucified Him, saying, "…Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34 NIV). This powerful example of forbearance teaches us that responding with blessing instead of cursing is not only possible but also how we inherit God's blessing.
Forbearance is rooted in God’s grace, the same grace He extends to us daily. When we resist the urge to repay evil with evil, we trust in His ultimate justice. Forbearance will serve us well when we follow Jesus’ example and walk in His peace in all situations. We all face hurts that we would like to see justified. What are areas of hurt in your life where you can extend forbearance and grace? Ask God to help you trust Him with each one.
