Freely Speaking Audio Devotions

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Marge Webb.

“While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he

fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them’” (Acts 7:59-60

NIV).

Since my teens, I have found Stephen's story fascinating. I am not a violent person, yet I can imagine this was indeed a gruesome murder scene. Stephen endured jagged stones hurling through the air aimed at his head and, ultimately, crucifixion.

Stoning and crucifixion were a dreadful form of execution, one reserved for the most violent offenders. I suppose my fascination with this story came from Stephen's response to his accusers.

Like Jesus, religious leaders accused Stephen of not practicing religion the way they were accustomed to. The Pharisees focused on the law, the temple, and Moses. Stephen knew the law but focused on miracles (Acts 6:8).

While Jesus quietly listened to his accusers, Stephen faced his impending death by preaching boldly to those holding the murder weapons. He used the scriptures and law of the day to remind them of their Abrahamic history and the pilgrimage of Moses.

Yet it was Stephen's Messianic message that irked them. Stephen knew this but was prompted by the Holy Spirit; he gave his message and his life to proclaim the good news.

Both Stephen and Jesus were murdered in the cruelest of ways; neither deserved their punishment. Yet, in their final moments, Jesus and Stephen asked God to forgive their accusers.

I don't believe I would have responded the same way as Stephen. I would have followed the example of Jesus and kept my mouth shut. I would have been quiet, hoping they would change their minds and drop the rocks.

Jesus said Father, forgive them; they don't know what they are doing. Stephen said Lord, do not hold this sin against them. Despite the suffering unfairly brought against them, their responses were selfless.

We may be scorned or laughed at for sharing the good news, but whenever we face unfair judgment, let's recall the response of forgiveness.
