Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Karen Wardle.
“Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:9-10 ESV).
Friendship is often built on simple acts of kindness. It’s not always about grand gestures but seeing someone’s needs and stepping into their life with love and care. Kindness, especially when given selflessly, can reflect the heart of God and build bridges between people.
One day, I came across a homeless man sitting on a bench. He asked for money, openly admitting he wanted it for alcohol. Instead of walking away or judging him, I asked what he truly needed. He hesitated and then confessed his teeth were sore.
That moment became an opportunity to serve. I went to a nearby pharmacy and bought painkillers, a numbing agent, and some gift cards for food. When I handed them to him, his expression shifted from hopelessness to gratitude. It was a small act that acknowledged his dignity and humanity.
1 Peter 4:9-10 reminds us to show hospitality and to use the gifts God has given us to serve others. Hospitality isn’t confined to inviting friends into our homes; it’s about opening our hearts to people, even strangers, with compassion and generosity. When we serve without grumbling or expecting anything in return, we reflect God’s grace, which He has abundantly poured out on us.
Jesus modeled this perfectly, befriending the outcasts and meeting their needs. Like Him, we’re called to see beyond the surface of people’s situations and care for their hearts. My encounter with that man reminded me that kindness is a bridge to understanding and connection, even with those we may never see again.
Acts of kindness, no matter how small, have a ripple effect. They testify to the love of Christ, showing others that they are seen, valued, and cared for. Today, let’s commit to being stewards of God’s grace, building friendships, and spreading His love through kindness. Who knows? Your simple act of love might answer someone’s unspoken prayer.
