Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
“Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV
At school, being alone in the playground made my stomach churn. Eager for friends, I didn’t always think carefully about who would positively influence my life. Longing to fit in, I overlooked important things like values and character.
I remember feeling drawn to some girls who seemed popular and fun. However, their poor choices did not reflect who I wanted to be, and I had to decide whether to keep spending time with them or distance myself for my own good.
My mother loved placing motivational quotes behind the bathroom door. Among the multiplication charts and Bible verses, one quote stayed with me: “You become like the company you keep.”
This simple truth is echoed in our key verse. It reminds us those people we surround ourselves with powerfully impact our lives. Spending time with those who make unwise choices makes it easier for us to follow the wrong path.
The opposite is equally true: when we spend time with people who encourage us to live a righteous life, we are more likely to do the same. Look around at those who inspire you by how they live—those who stand firm in their faith and act with love and integrity. Let their example guide you.
Most importantly, the more time we spend with God, learning from Him, and obeying His commands, the more we are transformed. When we make God our closest companion, His influence shapes us into people of integrity, faith, and love.
Remember, integrity is contagious. Take a moment to reflect on the company you keep and ask yourself how it impacts your character. Are you also leading others closer to God with your example?
