Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts

and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Marge Webb. Our scripture reading is from Psalm 73:25-26 NRSV.

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth I desire other than you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”. (Psalm 73:25-26 NRSV).

“I’m going to throw the book at you” took on a new meaning at work one day. I stood near the secretary’s desk with three other ladies outside our boss’s office. Suddenly, he took a thick plastic black binder laden with instruction manuals and heaved it into his office about 10 feet away. Then he retrieved the binder and threw it back toward us. It missed my face by just a few inches. Ironically, he was mad at the other ladies, not me. Another irony? He was a leader in his large Evangelical church.

We experience many types of relationships in our lives, but the verse above speaks to our most important relationship. Our love connection with our Heavenly Father is our strongest and most constant bond. We can’t always determine our relationships with people, but we can know God is our strength and our portion.

A portion means He gives us what we need when we need it most. He does not change. He does not fail. He is a God of both grace and justice, which is amazing if you think about it.

When faced with difficult relationships at work, home, or with friends, how we respond to others' actions and hurtful words is crucial. Prayer and setting boundaries can help us develop healthy relationships. We can turn to our Heavenly Father, seeking His guidance and strength, to discern when it's time to step away from unhealthy bonds. After the book-throwing incident, I worked for this boss for fifteen more years. I could tell you a dozen stories as strange as this one. Sadly, another guy who worked with us ended up as a patient in the state mental institution for many months.

After much prayer, God delivered me and provided me with another job. God showed me such favor with my new position and bosses, and I am forever grateful.

How about you? Are you dealing with a difficult person? Prayer is the key. We would love to pray with you today.
