Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts
and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Tyla Yauk.
“But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26
ESV).
Grief can be an overwhelming experience. It entraps you and makes you feel like it will never let go. We can look at grief in two different ways, either harmful or helpful. I have experienced both, and it takes diligence to keep my eyes looking upward on the most challenging days.
When I think of the healing experience within grief, a joyful opportunity to grow closer to the Lord, the days are better. But when I am focused on my humanity, the anguish and anxiety, and the desire to go backward, my days are bitter.
In this season of my grief journey, I am faced with the decision to let go and move on. I am painfully reminded of Lot’s wife. If you don’t know the story, Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back with worldly longing for the life she was told to give up. Though a dramatic depiction, it represents what can happen if we are unwilling to let go of the past and move on to the future God has prepared for us. Like Lot’s wife, grief can cause us to remain stuck where we are.
Fortunately, the Bible is full of scripture urging us to press on. In Philippians 3:13 (ESV), Paul writes, “But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.” I am also encouraged by Isaiah 43 18-19 (ESV) to know that God is already providing “a new thing” for me. These verses keep me moving forward with excitement for the treasure to be found on the other side of grief.
If you are stuck in grief today, I pray that you find scripture to help you move forward and not keep looking behind. Trust in the goodness of the Lord and the promises He has for you. Enjoy the sweet aroma of His presence as you travel this path.
Do you have any scripture that has encouraged you or may encourage others on their journey?
