Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Kristy Fitzgerald shares about miracles and how they testify to God’s love and goodness.

“And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen” John 21:25 (NKJV).

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a miracle as “An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.”

John’s gospel recounts many miracles in the lives of those who encountered Jesus. At the end of his book, John emphasizes how recounting all that Jesus did is impossible. There is simply too much.

In my life, the “divine extraordinary events” have been many. I’ve watched as God met my financial needs. I’ve seen Him heal a sick child when I laid my hands on her and prayed. I’ve witnessed the power of forgiveness for someone who wounded me and experienced the breaking of chains of addiction. But the greatest miracle of all was when He took my sin-laden heart, cleansed it, and took up residence, changing my life forever.

What we must remember about miracles is their purpose. They are events that manifest God's glory and grace. In recognizing this, we realize each miracle becomes a building block of our faith. God doesn’t perform miracles just for our benefit; He performs them to show His glory. His miracles become a testimony of His love and goodness.

I’m reminded of the hymn “The Love of God” by Frederick M. Lehman:

Could we with ink the ocean fill

And were the skies of parchment made

Were every stalk on Earth a quill

And every man a scribe by trade

To write the love of God above

Would drain the ocean dry

Nor could the scroll contain the whole

Though stretched from sky to sky

With wonder, we see the miracles God still performs: the miracle of a sweet baby’s new life, the miracle of celebrating the well-lived life of a saint who has gone home, the miracle of a changed life, a life once headed for destruction and now destined for eternity with God. All these and more are beautiful, extraordinary events manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.
