I love helping others and have done so most of my life. I’ve worked in fast food, customer service, and counseling. I have also volunteered in church ministry. All these jobs require giving of yourself and putting the needs of others first.
Jesus says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV).
My greatest service has always been first to my family. Being a great wife, mom, and mother-in-law is my priority, and I have found no greater joy than serving them first. When the kids were young, for me, it was making sure they had a homemade meal every day, driving them to practices and games, and serving alongside my husband in ministry, household chores, and responsibilities.
No matter where you find yourself in serving others, drawing from Jesus will allow you to continue to bless others. I used to tell my youngest every morning before he left the house for school to “be a blessing.” It was a reminder to him that although you have goals and dreams, be sure to serve others in the process through Christ Jesus.
Don’t forget self-care when serving others so you don’t let your cup get empty. It’s essential to fill up by making space for quiet time with God, rest, good nutrition, exercise, fun, and laughter.
Where have you found serving others to be fulfilling?

So important Barbara, drawing from Christ to refill our cup. It seems someday my cup has a hole in the bottom! I am called to pour out faster than it can refill. God is our strength, we are truly called to serve, but, as you said, we have to exercise some self care too. Help me today Lord to feel you near. On my Alexa right now is playing Heaven Help Me by Zach Williams
I love that serving family is a priority. I'm doing that we are teaching those closest to us the love of God. Sometimes serving family is the most difficult. I found that instead of serving, I often people-pleased instead of having the heart of serving God. In this I was more serving myself and my needs or what I perceived others wanted above what was actually best. Learning to love others through the Holy Spirit instead of working within myself to fix, is definitely the best way. Thanks for sharing Barbara!
Being single, my friends, especially my single friends, are my family. We help and support each other by filling in for family or a spouse. Giving a ride to a medical procedure, fixing a phone or computer, sharing a meal or offering support in tough situations. I am blessed to have a network of single friends to serve.
I agree, Susan. Single myself, I have a much closer relationship to my friends, especially the other single ladies. These gals are my sisters too. :)
I didn't add my grandkids, but this Grammy will do whatever she can to show them the love of Jesus through serving others!
Barbara, so often we think serving is outside the home. I appreciated the reminder that there is value I what we do for and with our family, the often unseen service!
I think it is such an important part of being a Christian and human is to go out a be a blessing to others. Christ fills us up when we fill others up!! So beautiful!!
Love this! Raising good humans, pointing them to Christ, and being good examples to those in our immediate circles is a great calling. Thank you Jesus for our families!
