I want to believe in the goodness of people when it comes to giving to others. According to Maslow’s five levels of a human’s basic needs, food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter are necessary to survive. For many people, these needs cannot be met without the help of charitable organizations.
We have all seen the devastation left behind by a storm. The aftermath is unbelievable, but many people often come together to give what they can to help those in need. I saw this human spirit of giving firsthand when my oldest lost his home in the May 20, 2013, tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. That day in a blink of an eye, all their family’s basic needs were swept away by an EF5 tornado. I saw a community come together and give what they could. That community wasn't just geographically close; it was a community of people, believers, and givers of all backgrounds. The salvation army, churches, and other charities were more than willing to give of their resources.
What happens when God calls you to give? Are you willing and a cheerful giver?
God’s word in the Bible has many verses on giving to others. For example, (1 John 3:17 NLT) says: “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion-how can God's love be in that person?”
God is calling us to give out of our abundance. When we give, it shows our love relationship with Jesus. Pray about giving to charities that have proven to be the hands and feet of God and have helped meet people’s basic needs. Once those needs are met, people can start growing to their full potential. The compassion you show to others in giving will introduce them to the living God in you.

This is so true about how communities support missions in time of need. It makes me think about when volunteering for several charities in the past, how during Christmas they would get tons of donations but during the rest of the year it was very lean. I like the verse you used and this is a reminder for me that if I love Jesus, I will be mindful in giving all the time. I like to go through my closet regularly and take out clothes I don't wear on a regular basis and donate them. Some I have only wore one time but they didn't fit right so they just hang there. Okay, I think I'll go clean out my closet!
