What joy when the words of the Bible jump off the page, fresh and alive! It makes writing fun, and words flow easily. But sometimes, reading the Bible isn’t my favorite activity. It can feel dry, boring, and even pointless.
This month I had a writing dilemma; I needed to figure out what to say. I usually have a story or three, a verse or seven running through my mind as a starting point. This month, my mind was blank. It isn’t that I don’t believe in reading the Bible; I do it daily. It isn’t that there aren’t great verses about studying His Word; there are many. But nothing was speaking to me. If I don’t feel what I’m writing, I know you won’t either.
When life was hard, reading God’s word became something I did out of habit. Trudging on, I fell into a pattern of checking boxes.
I have always been a bit of a nerd when reading my Bible, looking up the original Greek and Hebrew words. I love reading history and cross-referencing. My blank mind was a gift from God, forcing me back into my nerdy researching ways.
In Psalms 1:2-3 we see that those who are blessed find delight in the teachings of God. They meditate (think on, mutter) them. What they love, they think on, and they think on what they love. It’s an endless cycle that roots us by streams of living water where we become fruitful (blessing others), and they too, prosper. God’s word makes us strong. It enables us to bless others. It keeps us placed where we can live our best life.
Life will have seasons when all we can manage is checking boxes. Keep going. There is more. In reality, reading God’s word refuels us even in dry times. Ask God to breathe life into His word, reveal its beauty, and restore your joy in reading it. His word makes us blessed and makes us a blessing to others. If you don’t know where to start, ask below, we’d love to help.

God's Word, "keeps us placed where we can live our best life". So I will keep going even in those dry times. I loved reading your post.
I feel as you just said what we are are thinking. Sometimes the words seem so complicated but what his word does for us is not complicated they are the very thing that keeps us grounded. When I get anxious, a memorized scripture is all I need to get me back on point. Knowing that God is always in control knowing that even if it doesn't always make sense now it will at some point. Love your writing!💜💜🦋
Yes! I know the feelings you describe, Laura. I love digging into the Greek and Hebrew words too. But sometimes the words in scripture are just words, and other times they jump off the page. But don't give up! Ask God to reveal what you need. Great post!
