Freely Speaking with Lisa

One of my greatest blessings occurred when I was part of a Christian community that allowed me to serve others anonymously at a spiritual retreat. These ladies I served never knew my name or saw me during the weekend. I worked behind the scenes. However, I knew their names and prayed over each of them as I served.

That retreat was filled with many people willing to give up a weekend to serve. I am reminded of the scripture, “For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another…” (Romans 12: 4-8 NKJ).  Each of us has a gift that God has given us.

What better way to use the gift(s) that God has given us than to serve others and lead them to Christ? We do not help others for recognition or worldly rewards, but we serve as Christ did. God commands us to Love our neighbors as ourselves.

“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another” (Romans 12:10 NKJV). Just think, if all people would honor one another, what a blessed world we would live in!

Although I count those days of serving as one of my greatest blessings, God closed that chapter of my life and directed me on a different path. I often think of those days and the many relationships I built with much love and fondness. God used me to serve others. It was a blessing to me, and I hope it was a blessing to those I served as well. Serving can be a blessing and not a chore. Serve with Joy!

What is your motivation for serving? Recognition? Pride? Love for God’s people?

Thank you Lisa! This is so good and thought provoking. It is so easy for me to sink into being prideful about serving. However, the motto of Dallas Jenkins, creator of The Chosen, comes to mind. I only bring the five loaves and two fish and God does the rest. Whatever small thing I can do to serve others, it's only up to God to use it for His purpose.

Honestly, as a young woman I was serving in pride without evening knowing it. We don't realize but the accolades promote a sense of self-pride. So when you aren't getting the applause you feel you aren't doing a good job. But now through Christ, I realize the only thing I really need is God saying, "well done!" I now know that whatever I do in His name in love is honoring God. People-pleasing is something to keep in check with the Holy Spirit.

Thank you Lisa for sharing. I too loved serving anonymously in a prayer room at those retreats. We were the "behind the scenes" people who made everything flow seamlessly. We scurried around tirelessly working to ensure the attendees had a wonderful experience with God. God does the same for is, We can't see Him working, but we feel His love. I pray each day, that I work to care for Al that my serving will make His day brighter somehow. Thanks for the memories sister.
