“I’ve lost my joy,” declared my friend. The look on her face said it all. Her demeanor screamed sadness and defeat, and her smile turned into a frown. A lack of joy indicated that things were not right in her world.
It’s hard to hold onto something as elusive as joy. Dictated by circumstances, joy is fleeting, here one minute and gone the next. If all is right with the world, we feel happy and content. Add the unexpected, difficult, or disastrous, and our hearts quickly turn to despair. Like my friend, you probably know that worldly joy runs through our hands like sand, leaving us empty and wanting.
Joy is defined as pleasure and happiness evoked by well-being, achievements, or when we get what we want. To avoid pain and sadness, we seek anything or anyone that brings temporary pleasure.
Through Jesus, it is possible to experience such emotion, even when life tells us nothing is left to smile about. The Bible speaks of a joy that cannot be stolen. In our ups and downs, this joy is glorious! Sounds amazing, right?
Let’s look at 1 Peter 1:8-9 (NIV):
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
You have not seen Jesus, yet you have chosen to believe in and love Him. Even though you are yet to set your eyes on the Savior of your soul, you can and will experience joy in His presence. True happiness is found in Jesus and salvation! The world will tell you otherwise, yet you can genuinely know glorious joy through faith in Christ.
Joy inexpressible is a gift for all believers. It is a profound, powerful, and personal joy you cannot explain. Faith opens the door to receiving the glorious joy of Christ. Friend, God provides abundant and complete joy that will always make you smile!

I've found joy to be illusive until I started actually praying for it & learning what it really is. It is so much more than plain ol happiness. I think because it is a feeling it is so much harder to describe. To me it has been a gray pounding period of life, a time devoid of color where all of a sudden you stumble on a beautiful box of new water colors and paper and the sun pops through. You definitely know when you have experienced joy! Yesterday my 16 month old grandson (who is a handful ... a polite way of putting it) out of nowhere came over and patted my face and gave me a sloppy kiss. Wow ... a pop of pure joy to see his smiling face ... a joy filled memory.
Margaret, what a beautiful picture of joy in your life. I smiled at your grandson's spontaneous expression of love. Adorable!
Thank-you Sharee. It seems lately true joy has been hidden from me. My days are not filled with moments of happiness or smiles. True Joy and strength come from the Lord, I know that and I have to dig deep to feel that joy. Honestly, I've been bordering on depression lately. Tears fall and I know God catches each one.
Debbie, thank you for sharing. You are going through such a season of change. God sees your deep digging and He will be found.
...weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning. - Psalm 30:5
Joy is an inexpressible gift! I love it! We can never describe or imagine the sacrifice Jesus made for us to give us joy.
So true, Susan! I love that God wants us to know and experience true joy!
I went through ups and down but I do have to say that when my life was focused on Jesus and not on my circumstances I sure have more joyful days. He is in control and when I put my faith before my feelings my life feels more at peace. Beautiful post!💜💜💜
Sarah, love that statement - "faith before feelings." Praise God god your joyful days. May there be more!
